Papaver Rhoeas - Red Field Poppy
A most common form of poppy in the UK. Seen growing wild in fields and borders. It is reported to have some medicinal uses and is also used as a flavouring.
Sow the seeds either in Autumn or Spring - For Autumn sowings sow in peat pots and keep moist but not waterlogged.
For spring sowings sow where they are to grow appx 0.5 cm /1/4" deep.
The seeds germinate quickly usually within 2 - 3 weeks at approx 15 Deg C
As with all poppies they like a rich well drained soil with some well rotted manure added.
Poppies do not transplant very well so take care when planting out Autumn sown varieites - this is why peat pots are best used.
Thin Spring sown seedlings as necessary.
