Anthyllis vulneraria
Kidney Vetch
Description

A low growing species that tends to inhabit the chalky / Limestone grasslands of the UK. It bears small but attractive yellow flowers for May - October making it a very useful plant for Insects (especially the Small Blue Butterfly)as it is an early and late source of Pollen. It prefers a soil that is low in nutrients and does not do well on richer soils where other species tend to take over.

Cultivation

Sow the seeds late Autumn for best results - The seeds may germinate prior to dying back and then re-emerging the following Spring although the majority should not germinate until the following Spring. They can be sown where they are to grow or in pots and left outside (a coldframe is ideal) Cover lightly and make sure they do not fully dry out.
These can be grown at any time of year but best germination rates are obtained from later overwintered sowings as this mimics there natural method of propagation
Finally plant out in final position in full Sun - This prefers a chalky Limestone soil.
